Why Cybersecurity Is Everyone’s Problem — Not Just a Hacker’s
By Chinmay Chandra
When we hear the word cybersecurity most of us think of hackers sitting in dark rooms and breaking into computers.. The truth is much simpler. Cybersecurity affects every one of us even if we do not realize it.
I think about how much of our life happens online. We use smartphones for banking, shopping, studying and social media. We even use them to store our photos and documents. One weak password or one bad click on a link can put all that important information at risk.
What is interesting is that cyberattacks do not always start with hacking tricks. Often cyberattacks start with a human mistake. A person might click an email or download a file they do not know. Someone might even share an OTP without thinking. This is why cybersecurity cannot be left to IT experts or hackers. Everyone has a role to play in cybersecurity.
For students this means protecting college accounts and staying away from phishing scams. For employees it means being careful with company data. For parents or older family members it means spotting messages and scam calls. Even small habits can help a lot. You can use passwords turn on two-factor authentication update your software and always think before you click.
Cybersecurity is about being aware not about being afraid. We do not have to become cybersecurity experts to stay safe. We just need to get into the habit of questioning things that look strange.
The digital world is a part of our lives every day. As we rely on technology we also have more responsibility to use technology safely.
Cybersecurity is not about stopping hackers. Cybersecurity is, about protecting our identities, our money, our privacy, our businesses and the people we love.
In the end cybersecurity is everyone’s problem because the internet belongs to everyone—and keeping the internet safe starts with each one of us.
